The Yucca Valley High School Trojans fought hard against Rowland High School and improved on all aspects of game from two weeks ago, said Coach Andrew Amosa. The offense was led by Creston Cole with 20 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown. Tommy Gieger added 26 yards of rushing with his first start at quarterback. On defense, Larry Williamson led the Trojans with seven tackles. Taylor Smith and Gabe Contreras each had six tackles. Sophomore Blake Rowe played his first game on varsity and chipped in with five tackles and a quarterback sack.
The Trojan junior varsity tied, 14-14, and varsity game was 46-10. Offensive stand-out was Lucas Lopez with 91 yards and two touchdowns. The defensive stand-out was Joseph Jennings, with nine tackles, one sack, and one fumble.
The Twentynine Palms Varsity Wildcat football team jumped out to a big lead Friday night at Indio, but had to make a big defensive effort in the red zone in the final minutes to protect a hard fought 36-30 victory. The ’Cats jumped out to a 27-0 first half lead thanks to big plays by Jimmy Shragge, Jayvon Johnson, and Beayahn Carrllo. With the heat and humidity playing a huge factor in the game both teams played valiantly in the final quarter. Coach Ernest Martinez said the offensive leaders of the game were Carrllo with 95 yards on six carries, and Shragge with 150 yards on 14 carries. Defensively Andrew Wilson, Kyle Hope, Caleb Roy, and Jayvon Johnson combined to lead the team in tackles. Tyler McGahuey and Shane Estrada also had key defensive plays and teamed up for 2 and ½ sacks on the night.
The frosh-sophomore won the early contest 28-0 in a big shutout victory to start the season. Hugh Carpenter scored two touchdowns to lead the young Cats to Victory. D’Shaun Barrett, Eneliko Tuli, K.J. Magwood, and Derek Sutherland made big plays in the game.
The Twentynine Palms High School girls’ tennis team opened the 2014 season this past Tuesday with a big 12 – 6 win against Cathedral City high school. Then on Thursday, they travelled to Indio high school and defeated the Rajah’s by a score of 10 – 8. Leading the Wildcats this year is senior team captain Makayla Ogdahl and her doubles partner Alex Morrissey, who won all sets played in both matches.
