The Twentynine Palms fireworks show will go on as planned tonight. Twentynine Palms firefighters were called to a fire at 11:38 p.m. Friday night in the box truck that was used to carry the fireworks to the show site at the junior high school. Firefighter Lane McGivern said the truck was fully involved with flames when they arrived, but only a few fireworks were still inside; most had already been set up for tonight’s show. McGivern said firefighters did hear a few pops and bangs from the fireworks inside the truck. The RVs used by the employees of the fireworks company were threatened by the fire, and that tonight’s fireworks display was about 100 feet downwind of the fire; sparks and embers from the fire could have started the fireworks on fire, but firefighters–with the assistance of Combat Center firefighters–contained the blaze in about 20 minutes. McGivern said the cause of the fire was mechanical in the truck’s engine.
