Twentynine Palms firefighters had to give a pep talk Monday to a hiker in Joshua Tree National Park who didn’t think she could hike back out. Fire Captain Mike Murphy said firefighters were called about 5:40 p.m. to the Boy Scout Trail in the Indian Cove area for a 19-year-old tourist who was about three-quarters of a mile from the trailhead. He said the woman, who was hiking alone and was exhausted and dehydrated, was able to call 911 on her cell phone, which died shortly afterwards. Firefighters gave her some fluids and were able to convince her that she could finish the walk on her own with them escorting her.
