Listed as ‘Mural #5’, the Desert Storm Homecoming & Victory Parade mural created by Chuck Caplinger in 1995 has visibly faded and is getting a do-over starting October 12. Reporter Heather Clisby has the details …
To honor the Operation Desert Storm homecoming and 1991 Victory Parade that celebrated the return of troops to the base in Twentynine Palms, local mural artist Chuck Caplinger honored the joyful event in 1995 with a large-scale depiction. Entitled Desert Storm Homecoming & Victory Parade, years of harsh sun and weather have faded Mural #5 so a restoration is in order.
Starting Monday, October 12, an expert crew consisting of Caplinger, his wife, Holgie Caplinger, and artist David Greene, will begin restoring the once-vibrant painting.
The mural is located on the south wall of the Desert Cycle Works building at 6177 Adobe Road. Once restored, there will be an official dedication sometime in 2021.
Action Council for 29 Palms (Action 29 Palms) and its committee for the restoration and repainting of Mural #5 are the force behind the City’s “Oasis of Murals’ which consists of 26 murals across town depicting the civic history, ties to the military and scenes of desert plants and creatures.
As of September, Action 29 Palms raised $20,863 towards the $45,000 goal for the restoration project. Donations can be made at action29palmsmurals.com.
