With no public in attendance per COVID-19 restrictions, the Twentynine Palms City Council wrapped up 2020 last night with recognitions and awards. Mayor Joel Klink delivered the annual State of the City Address noting that “2020 could not go fast enough.”
Video reports were shared by Joshua Tree National Park Superintendent David Smith and Supervisor Dawn Rowe. All recognized the challenges that COVID-19 brought to the community, though Klink noted that the city is doing well financially.
The mayor presented the Employee of the Year award to Community Development Director Travis Clark and the Mayor’s Recognition Award to Astrid Johnson, president of Morongo Basin ARCH.
Incumbents Steven Bilderain and Joel Klink were sworn in to their offices, representing Districts 1 and 2, respectively.
The council approved the third element project design for Project Phoenix and awarded the contract to Jacobsson Engineering Construction, Inc. for $3.89 million. Work will begin January 4 and building will begin in March.
The annual succession change-up closed the meeting with Mayor Daniel Mintz and Mayor Pro Tem Karmolette O’Gilvie at the helm.
