The Twentynine Palms City Council talked a lot about money at its meeting last night. Reporter David Haldane was there and filed this…
The City of Twentynine Palms will soon start dipping into its savings. That was the main takeaway from last night’s city council meeting at which the council established a new policy of maintaining just 60 to 65 percent of its operating budget in unrestricted reserves. Historically, a much larger percentage of city funds has been saved for rainy days.
The council specified that some of the newly freed up funds—which could amount to several million dollars—be used to help defray the costs of public employee retirements, Project Phoenix, and a safety improvement project on Highway 62.
In other business, the council voted 4-1 to approve a conditional use permit for a new electronic sign at Theatre 29. The lone standout was Mayor Pro Tem Steven Bilderain, who said he’d prefer spending the money for a sign at City Hall.
