The subject of sanctuary cities wasn’t on the agenda for last night’s Twentynine Palms City Council meeting. Yet it managed, nonetheless, to rear its head. Reporter David Haldane was there and explains…
The new Saturday farmers market in Twentynine Palms is going great guns. But what’s really on people’s minds are sanctuary cities.
That’s the takeaway from last night’s City Council meeting where Roger Thomas, who’s spearheading the outdoor market, reported that the crowd has doubled in the two weeks since it started. He was followed, though, by two speakers – including former Council member Cora Heiser – who urged the Council to take up the sanctuary issue at a future meeting.
The subject has been discussed there before, but without resolution.
In the interim, however, several cities in Orange and San Diego Counties – as well as the counties themselves – have gone on record opposing California’s status as a sanctuary state. Heiser, for one, believes the time may be right for Twentynine Palms to do the same.
“It should be a good sign for our City Council that they’d be doing the right thing. I would think that this should give more confidence.”
