A major national argument rears its head locally tonight as the Twentynine Palms City Council discusses sanctuary for immigration scofflaws. Reporter David Haldane has the story…
Should Twentynine Palms join the list of California cities opposed to providing sanctuary for illegal immigrants? The question will finally make an official appearance on tonight’s City Council agenda.
The issue has come up previously, most recently last month when former council member Cora Heiser urged the city to jump on the anti-sanctuary bandwagon. Several current Council members have expressed similar sentiments in the past.
Under the state’s so-called sanctuary law—formally known as the California Values Act—cities are forbidden to cooperate with federal authorities in detaining or prosecuting individuals believed to have entered the country illegally. A number of cities in Orange and San Diego Counties—as well as those counties themselves—have gone on record opposing the law, some even to the point of joining legal challenges against it.
Tonight’s meeting gets underway 5 p.m. at City Hall on Adobe Road.
