TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER TERMINATING REINVESTMENT PLAN

The Twentynine Palms City council meets tonight to, among other things, consider terminating the city’s community reinvestment plan. Created in 2014, the plan was supposed to assist local businesses in constructing trash enclosures, replacing pole signs, paying for new paint, and installing drought tolerant landscaping.
To date, however, less than 38,000 of the available $250,000 has actually been used. City staff attributes the low utilization to a number of problems including erroneous assumptions that the grants would be paid up front, as well as state requirements for tracking expenditures and using licensed contractors.
The measure being considered would reallocate the remaining funds to other council priorities.
The meeting gets under way 6 p.m. at the council chambers on Adobe Road.
