TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL TERMINATES FAULTY IMPROVEMENT PLAN

The Twentynine Palms City Council dropped a failed improvement plan that was flawed last night. Reporter David Haldane explains…
If you were planning to get the City of Twentynine Palms to front you a few thousand bucks for a new coat of paint on your business, forget about it. That option, if it ever existed, evaporated last night when the City Council voted unanimously to terminate its failed Community Reinvestment Plan.
Created in 2014, the plan was supposed to assist local businesses by making $250,000 available for constructing trash enclosures, replacing pole signs, installing drought tolerant landscaping and, yes, even painting a wall or two. The problem was how to get the money; while business owners assumed it would be paid up front, the city was only promising eventual reimbursement.
The result was a fizzle: a mere handful of recipients received a small portion of the funds. On Tuesday, the council finally pulled the plug, leaving only a sliver of hope for improvement-minded entrepreneurs that it might one day reconsider.
