TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL TALKS TRASH, ART AND MONEY

The Twentynine Palms City Council met last night to wrestle with upcoming state mandates around recycling while hearing positive updates on the City’s art activities. Reporter Heather Clisby has the details…

Tuesday night’s Twentynine Palms City Council meeting had a little something for everyone.

Presentation by Pat Flanagan of the Public Arts Advisory Committee (PAAC) honoring their 15th anniversary.

After approving a building code update for mobile home and RV parks to allow for more creative border materials, the Council heard some worrisome facts around the state’s trash, green waste and recycling mandates. Local businesses are struggling to obtain compliance and the current rate of recycling has been deemed “unacceptable.”

Representatives from River of Life Church accept a check and acknowledgement from Burrtec and Mayor Steven Bilderain for their participation in the Cash for Trash and Recycling Program.

There are two Assembly bills and one Senate bill that will force local businesses and residents to not only increase recycling but also include organic waste. Neither bill provides funding for additional bins or public outreach. The nearest composting facility is in Coachella and Burrtec is currently working on a transfer station in Yucca Valley for 2020.

LeeAnn Clarke of Action 29 Palms informed the Council that a recent fundraising effort for updating Mural #5 garnered over $11K. Another fundraising event is planned for February 7 and three new murals are scheduled for 2020.
