Tonight’s Twentynine Palms City Council meeting will hear pitches to secure portions of the Community Development Block Grant funds. The council will also discuss SB50, a state bill that gives cities two years to develop plans to spur development and increase housing density along transit corridors. Reporter Heather Clisby has the details…
Last November, San Bernardino County requested applications for Community Development Block Grant funds within Twentynine Palms. The Community Housing Development reviewed all applications and provided a recommendation list to the City. Tonight, the Twentynine Palms City Council will hear three-minute pitches from 10 presenters to secure their slice of the more than $137,000 pie. Final selections will be presented at the February 11 meeting.
The council will then consider its position on Senate Bill 50 and, if in opposition, will green light the mayor to sign an opposition letter to the state senate. Already opposed by the League of California Cities, SB50 would “undermine local authority” and would complicate local housing and sewer matters.
Also up for discussion is the city’s professional agreement with Charles Abbott and Associates for building and safety inspections, city engineering, constructions projects and other services. The city’s relationship to the firm dates back to 1991.
The Twentynine Palms City Council meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall on Adobe Road.
