The Twentynine Palms City Council met in regular session last night. Reporter David Haldane says the Council took the first step in Project Phoenix and is looking at a plan to have the city be the electric utility provider…
Project Phoenix, a multi-million-dollar plan to revitalize the commercial corridor of Twentynine Palms, took a $70,000 step toward realization last night. That’s how much the city will pay for a vacant 800-square-foot home standing in its way. The goal is to demolish the property—on the 6500 block of Smoketree Avenue—to make way for the project along Highway 62. The score so far: one down and twenty more to go.
In other business, the City Council directed staff to come up with a proposal for celebrating the 29th anniversary of the city’s incorporation on November 23, 1987. The upcoming anniversary coincides with the 100th birthday of Joshua Tree National Park.
Finally, the Council directed staff to look into creating something called a Community Choice Aggregate, an agreement under which the city could provide electricity to paying customers at potentially lower rates than the electric company.
