Last night’s Twentynine Palms City Council Meeting was focused on the upcoming election. The Assistant Superintendent of Business Services for the Morongo Unified School District, Sharon Flores, gave a presentation on Measure O, the $62 million bond that the district hopes to use for facilities upgrading and safety measures.
City Manager Frank Luckino highlighted two upcoming propositions of local concern. Proposition 1 provides funding for veterans’ housing and Proposition 2 funds the “No Place Like Home” program benefitting the homeless.
Regarding the slated demolition of two downtown buildings as part of Project Phoenix, the council was ready to approve both until Councilman John Cole suggested they simply refurbish one building to save the cost of constructing a storage building from scratch. The council will consider and re-visit.
Heidi Grunt, owner of the 29 Palms Inn and Campbell House, was unanimously approved as a new member of the Tourism Business Improvement District Advisory Board.
Finally, City Manager Frank Luckino asked for $250,000 to complete funding for the signal modification of the Adobe Road turn on to Highway 62 heading west, citing safety concerns.
