TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL RELEASES BURIAL GROUND, GETS PROJECT PHOENIX UPDATE

Last night, the Twentynine Palms City Council met to finalize a decision on the Chemehuevi cemetery and to get a much-anticipated update on Project Phoenix. Reporter Heather Clisby was there…

The Twentynine Palms City Council gathered last evening and approved the release of native burial grounds to the Chemehuevi tribe. Steve Gralla, the tribe’s CFO, was on hand to express gratitude for the decision. In addition, the council also heard a presentation from the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department on homeless enforcement, noting that 265 individuals were recently placed in temporary housing.

There was a motion to adopt Resolution 1827 which would raise funds toward building tourism efforts in the City, followed by a lively discussion on the revenue generated by vacation rentals, such as Airbnb.

Travis Clark, Community Development Director, stole the show with a detailed update on Project Phoenix. Working with the engineering firm, NV5, the planning commission will be soon be updating and improving the City’s look while aiming to make downtown a multi-use space for markets, festivals, car shows and the like.

Mayor McArthur Wright closed the meeting and banged the gavel in honor of Assistant City Manager Larry Bowden, who—after 27 years of working for the city—is retiring this week.
