TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL MEETS: BANNERS, YOUTH ACTIVITIES, PREDATOR RELOCATION

Tonight, the Twentynine Palms City Council will meet to discuss issues involving public art; an assembly bill regarding the release and placement of sexually violent predators; and the reinstatement of local sports programs. Reporter Heather Clisby has details …

The Twentynine Palms City Council will gather this evening (Tuesday, April 27) to discuss several items, including the six submitted designs for decorative city banners. With the theme of Mojave desert flora and fauna, all banner artists have a Twentynine Palms connection and have donated their artwork for the project.

The council will discuss and likely approve resuming adult and youth sports programs, activities, events, and public use of facilities once California moves out of the COVID-19-tiered restrictions on June 15.

Regarding the recent outcry over the proposed relocation of a sexually violent predator to the community, the council will likely approve a letter of support for AB 821 by Assembly member Jim Cooper. Though the bill would not affect that situation, it would pro-actively prepare for the next situation by providing public transparency, a clarification of “extraordinary circumstances,” and allowing for community representatives, witnesses and stakeholders to appear remotely. Most importantly, it would extend the county notice period from the current 30 days to 90 days.

The council will also do an initial review of the preliminary two-year general fund budget for fiscal year 2021/22 and 2022/23.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 6136 Adobe Road, and is available for livestreaming and on-demand at the city’s website, 29palms.org.
