Battle lines were drawn for what could be future confrontations over the issue of medical marijuana in Twentynine Palms. In the first of a two-part story on the Tuesday night Council Meeting, reporter Dan Stork concentrates on that issue. Tomorrow: crime and safety, block grants, city manager selection, and a nature camp…
A vote to add mobile units to the definitions of medical marijuana dispensaries—which are prohibited in Twentynine Palms—was preceded by opposing views by Cora Heiser and Macarthur Wright on the prohibition itself, with Heiser arguing for allowing them: “I’ve had cancer–I’ve had it twice. I would like the opportunity if medicinal marijuana was available to me, that I would be able to get that,” and Wright saying, “It’s not the kind of business we want in Twentynine Palms.” John Cole and Dan Mintz observed that permission or prohibition was not on the agenda, just a definitional issue. Joel Klink suggested that city residents desiring medical marijuana could utilize Reach Out Morongo Basin to take them to where it is available–perhaps as near as Yucca Valley. The definitional change passed 4-1, Heiser dissenting. Heiser was irate and aghast when none of her colleagues supplied the required second to her request to place a review of the entire ordinance on a future agenda.
