Twentynine Palms City Council meeting recap (Sept 13)

The Twentynine Palms City Council met last night. Marge Doyle from the Morongo Basin Healthcare District had a presentation about efforts to end the HIV epidemic. Doyle says that the fight to eradicate the virus has had setbacks due to COVID – and the CDC is teaming up with organizations like the MBHD to normalize HIV testing for all age groups – with larger goals like reducing infections by 75% by 2025.

Mayor Ogilvy declared September “Hunger Action Month” after a presentation by FIND – an organization that works with local food banks in the desert region and beyond. They say that over 150,000 people in southern San Bernardino county rely on food banks – and they distribute food through 7 partners alone in the desert region.

Public comments included a request for clarification on Vacation Home Rentals (VHR) and Short Term Rental (SHR) education requirements for owners – along with questions around the new sewage treatment plant and the costs that will be shouldered by local businesses for operating costs.
