TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL HOLDS HEARING ON DISTRICT VERSUS AT-LARGE ELECTIONS

The Twentynine Palms City Council tonight once again takes up a controversial issue that’s been making its rounds in the Morongo Basin. Reporter David Haldane explains…

If you have feelings about the City of Twentynine Palms transitioning from at-large to district-based elections, tonight is your chance to let them be known.

That’s when the City Council holds its second public hearing on the matter in as many weeks. During the first hearing earlier this month, several speakers voiced strong opposition to the idea, a sentiment echoed by nearly all the Council members. But the city is under pressure to make the change following a letter from an attorney threatening legal action if it doesn’t. At-large elections, the attorney argues, discriminate against minority voters in violation of California’s Voting Rights Act.

Stay tuned.

In other business, the Council will discuss appointing a new planning commissioner to replace one who resigned and consider working with the San Bernardino County Flood Control District to develop a system of multi-purpose trails.
Tonight’s meeting gets underway 6 p.m. at City Hall on Adobe Road.
