TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL HEARS OF MAJOR INCREASE IN CRIME, CITATIONS

The Twentynine Palms City Council heard some concerning news last night. A law enforcement update showed a dramatic rise in major crime, citations, and calls for service. Reporter David Haldane has the disturbing statistics…
The Twentynine Palms Police Department has been busy this year. To date, officers have received 19 percent more calls for service than last year, though actual arrests have increased only slightly. At the same time, however, citations of all kinds have gone up dramatically; from 131 to 559, an increase of nearly 77 percent.
That’s the gist of a law enforcement update presented to the City Council last night by Jeff Joling, a captain with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, who also serves as the city’s police chief.
Overall, according to his report, major crime is up about 33% and covering a bit more ground. While the number of robberies decreased significantly and homicides remained at zero, the city has experienced noticeably more rapes and arsons in 2016.
