The Twentynine Palms City Council gathered last night for a brief meeting on just two matters of city improvement. Reporter Heather Clisby was there…
Code Enforcement Officer Jim Thornburg made a strong case before the Twentynine Palms City Council meeting last night for the council to declare a property on the 6600 block of La Luna Avenue a Dangerous Building and a public nuisance. Thornburg submitted a detailed report that offered the long history of a property that first became an eyesore in 2009.
After a 2010 fire made the house unlivable, transients moved in, despite the home being boarded up by the city. Neighbors Janice Tucker and Iris Beatty pleaded with the Council to take action as unwelcome human activity and blowing debris had caused problems. Thornburg noted that there had been clear and frequent attempts to communicate with the owner, who resides in Florida, but the property remains neglected. The council unanimously approved the declaration and the property should be cleared within the next three to four months.
The council also approved a letter to CalTrans that would allow the creation of a left turn lane from Highway 62 on to Cholla Avenue. The change is tied to the downtown improvement plan and is in lieu of adding an additional stoplight.
