Twentynine Palms residents wanting to use medicinal marijuana legally will have to wait a while. That according to a vote by the City Council last night affirming a local ban despite the objections of several onlookers and Council member Cora Heiser, who cast the only no vote.
“It’s a legal business and I don’t believe we have the right to ban a legal business,” Heiser said. “I don’t think we should turn morality into law. Personally I don’t use marijuana, but if I had cancer I might. I think that we’re afraid and it should go to a vote.”
Speaking for the majority, Council Member McArthur Wright said he supported the ban. “I’ve seen the effects,” he said. “I don’t think it’s something we should introduce to our community because of everything else that goes along with it; it brings more problems than it does solutions.”
In other business, the Council voted to change the name of El Paseo Drive to Veterans’ Way between Adobe Road and Ocotillo Avenue.
