The Twentynine Palms City Council met last night dealt with the battle of needing funding for several projects. Reporter Tanisha Cureton speaks on how these funds were approved and how they were distributed…
The Twentynine Palms City Council approved 5-to-0 the $3.7 million Sherriff’s contract. Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Barta warned the council members that due to the requirements of Assembly Bill 953, The Racial Profiling Act, that goes into effect July 1, deputies will have to spend more time with every stop that they make. City Manager Frank Luckino described it as an unfunded mandate and the cost will most likely be passed along to the city and Barta added it will most likely increase response times. In other business, the city council expressed their support for Prop 68. Frank Luckino mentioned that Prop 68 doesn’t increase taxes and may provide funding for Project Phoenix. And finally, the city council voted 4-to-1 to grant the Public Art Advisory Committee $3,000 instead of the $5,000 they requested. John Cole opposed the reduction. “I just don’t think we ought to worry about $2,000.”
