Project Phoenix, the long-running downtown redevelopment plan for the city of Twentynine Palms, is up for a rebranding and needs your help. Reporter Heather Clisby has details…
For over seven years now, the city of Twentynine Palms has put forth a hopeful vision for its downtown area—a revised upgrade to a civic plaza that will bring all of its desert citizens together. It was named Project Phoenix, a reference to a bird in Greek mythology that rises from the ashes and is born anew. Instead, the name has created false connotations with Phoenix, Arizona. A similar complaint has been lodged against Yucca Avenue, a downtown street, which seemingly references nearby Yucca Valley. Thus, in an effort to help Twentynine Palms reclaim its individuality and be all it can be, the City is hosting a renaming contest for both Project Phoenix and Yucca Avenue. You can submit up to three suggestions in each category, the deadline to submit is January 4, 2019. There is no age limit or geographic restriction. Entries should be “unique, something that reflects the character, culture, and environment of the City of Twentynine Palms.” A $300 cash prize will be awarded to the winner in each category.
