The Twentynine Palms City Council takes another look at remodeling Theater 29 tonight. Reporter David Haldane has the details…
$1.6 million. That’s about how much it will cost to expand and renovate Theater 29, the popular dramatic arts venue in Twentynine Palms. Two months ago, the City Council tentatively approved increasing the theater’s capacity, adding more parking, improving its stage and building an outdoor concert venue.
Concerned that planners had low-balled the cost, however, the Council also instructed staff to return to a future meeting with an updated projection. That meeting is tonight and, sure enough, the new price tag is more than three times the original.
In other business, the Council will consider appointing Max Walker to replace former Planning Commissioner Larry Briggs, who resigned earlier this month. It will also hold a public hearing on underground utility districts for Project Phoenix and consider creating a bike lane on Baseline Road from Utah to Bedouin.
Tonight’s meeting gets underway 6 p.m. at City Hall on Adobe Road.
