The Yucca Valley High School Trojan cross-country teams took part in the 39th annual Woodbridge Cross-Country Invitational for the 22nd year on Friday.
The 16 runners amassed 13 personal best times, eight medals, four top 10 marks for their respective class, and one all-time top 10 mark.
Coach Jay Stepp said the varsity boys had the only scoring team of the night. They placed eighth out of 27 teams. Leading the way for the boys was Elijah Ocegueda. He covered the 3-mile course in 15:29, placing eighth out of 191 runners. Elijah’s time was good enough to tie Yucca Valley’s junior class record and put him number 2 overall behind Jeff Larson’s record of 15:11.
Andy Tamayo was next for the Trojans. His time of 15:56 was good enough for 25th, and placing him seventh on the senior list.
The varsity girls were shorthanded this week and only competed with four girls. However, their intensity produced three medals, three personal records, and two made the top 10 of their class.
Emma Mills led the way with a 21st place finish out of 184, running 18:40 and landing in the number 2 spot for senior girls. Mills already holds the All-Time number 2 time of 18:33, behind Katarina Ratkowiak’s time of 17:57 set in 2007.
Her sister, Sara Mills, was next in line, running 19:32, placing 50th overall. She put herself at number 6 on the junior list.
Cynthia Angeles had a personal record at 20:31 and placed 91st overall.
The Trojans will be taking a week off from racing and will compete next at the Central Park Invitational on October 5. Races will start at 8:30 a.m.
