As the annual Tour De Palm Springs charity bike ride is quickly approaching, the Indio CHP would like to remind all drivers and bicyclists to “share the road” tomorrow, February 12, 2022. Beginning at 6:30 a.m. the valley roadways will be filled with thousands of bicyclists riding for a good cause. Dillon Road will be closed from Thousand Palms Canyon to Berdoo Canyon from 7:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Several paths are used for the annual ride, allowing participants to ride a variety of courses ranging from one mile to 100 miles.
This year, the Indio CHP Office has increased the number of officers which allows for extra coverage to ensure the safety of the participants, as well as motorists. Two of those officers will be CHP motorcycles, allowing for roving coverage.
Motorists traveling down below tomorrow are encouraged to reduce their speed when passing a bicyclist. Air currents, produced by a motor vehicle when passing by an object, can possibly push a bicyclist over and off the roadway. California law requires a minimum distance of three feet, when passing a bicyclist.
