TRANSITION JOSHUA TREE FOCUSING ON PERMACULTURE AND WATER

Transition Joshua Tree has been focusing on Permaculture and water harvesting. Dan Stork explains what those are, and has a status update on the group’s efforts…
According to Transition Joshua Tree, Permaculture is a land use design method that works with the deep patterns of nature to regenerate ecosystems and create sustainable human habitation. The group’s first hands-on, experiential public workshop will be about water harvesting earthworks. These are permaculture systems that capture rain water runoff, slowing it down so that it can sink into and hydrate the land and the surrounding vegetation. Transition Joshua Tree has been working on a workshop design for the Joshua Tree property of Transition members Kathy Jennings and Eva Montville. Working closely with the natural patterns of the land and with the needs and aesthetics of the property owners, there have been several iterations to reach a water harvesting design. The public workshop is intended for the second half of February, at a date to be announced, so that it will occur soon after team member Jill Giegerich’s next public Drylands Permaculture Lecture in Yucca Valley in early February. Five Transition Joshua Tree members that have completed their PDCs (permaculture design certification). Tim Delorey, Jill Giegerich, Damian Lester, Gregory Glenn and Kathy Jennings are all now certified “Permies”. Anyone interested in joining a TJT Permaculture Team once this project is complete, please email [email protected].
