TPPC swears in new commissioners, study session on unhoused

The Twentynine Palms Planning Commission meets tonight to swear in two new commissioners, hold a public hearing on off-street parking and loading, and conduct a study session on homelessness and housing.

Tonight, the Twentynine Palms Planning Commission will welcome two new commissioners with an installation ceremony for Alexander Garcia, a community organizer and homeless advocate, and Jessica Cure, principal at Cure Designs.

Next the commission will host a public hearing to address a discrepancy between the city’s 2012 General Plan, which requires “that single family residential development construct a two-car garage,” and a subsequent ordinance that clarifies two spaces per dwelling, be they covered or uncovered.

A February 21 study session on the issue resulted in several suggested changes:

  • Specific code definitions for a carport, a private garage and a public garage.
  • New single-family homes may include uncovered parking, but multi-family structures can have both covered and uncovered parking.
  • Thus, single-family structures that have been converted are not required to add a garage where uncovered parking is available.
  • A driveway is considered an uncovered parking space for multi-family structures.

The meeting will conclude with a Homeless Housing Committee Study Session. The committee consists of all five commissioners plus two citizens, architect Andrea Keller and hotelier Veno Nathraj.

The 5:00 p.m. meeting takes place on Tuesday, June 20, at City Hall, 6136 Adobe Road, and can be livestreamed or viewed on-demand via the city’s website, 29palms.org.
