In a special meeting held last night, with Council Member Robert Lombardo Skyping in from Indiana, the Yucca Valley Town Council approved an early retirement incentive program. Up to 19 employees qualify for the program: they’re over 50 years old, and vested in the Public Employee Retirement System. The Council also authorized the town manager to negotiate separate agreements with the employees who will take early retirement. Employees who take early retirement will receive six months severance pay and 12 months of medical coverage. The Council will take $300,000 from the general fund to pay for the program; it expects the early retirement program will save the Town $450,000 by leaving some of the positions vacant, although some will be filled. The retirements will take place in three waves—mid April, early May, and early June.
