As we near the end of 2019, we are looking back at some of the top stories of the year. Starting off is a story we aired on January 21, about a double shooting in Yucca Valley. Deputies were called in the early morning hours to a gas station at the corner of Sage Avenue and Highway 62. Nicholas Shine, 20, had staggered into the gas station and said he’d been shot. Deputies searched the area and found the body of Tymmothy Mosley, 19, at the back of the America’s Best Value Inn and Suites. No charges have been filed against Shine.
February started off with a death due to flash flooding in Yucca Valley. On February 2, Earl Schmitt, 76, died when his rental car was washed away when a wave of water came through the La Contenta Wash.
At the end of the February, Yucca Valley and parts of the Morongo Basin were included in a quarantine of chickens and other poultry as virulent Newcastle’s disease killed birds in San Bernardino County. The county is still under quarantine.
In April, two Joshua Tree women were cited after more than 100 dogs were found on their property. Valaria Schultz was cited and released for allowing her young child to live in filthy conditions. Animal Control issued eight administrative citations to Jessica Gregory, who runs Moonlight Animal Rescue, for county code violations concerning the animals.
We’ll have more of the Morongo Basin’s top stories of 2019 in future newscasts.
