UPDATED: Three vehicle collision on Hwy. 247 results in three injured, one airlifted to Desert Regional Medical

A three vehicle collision on Old Woman Springs road Monday morning left three people with injuries, including one person who was airlifted to treatment.

At around 8 a.m. February 3, three vehicles were involved in a head-on collision on Old Woman Springs Road near Mikiska Blvd in Johnson Valley. Z107.7 has reached out to the California Highway Patrol for details on the cause of the collision, and we will update this story as we learn more.

A representative from San Bernardino County Fire described the collision as involving three vehicles. They said that one person was trapped in their vehicle, and was extricated using the jaws of life. They were then taken via aircraft to Desert Regional Medical Center.

Two other people involved suffered minor injuries. One of them was transported via ground to Hi-Desert Medical Center for treatment.

The stretch of Old Woman Springs Road that connects Johnson Valley and Landers is a particularly dangerous stretch of state road that has seen numerous collisions in the last five years. Traffic on the two-lane road is particularly heavy this week on account of the King of the Hammers off-roading event happening in Johnson Valley which attracts thousands of spectators, many of whom travel with their own OHVs.

UPDATED 10:30 a.m.:

The California Highway Patrol identified one of the drivers as Diego Figueroa, a 35 year old man from Riverside, and said he was driving a Ford Bronco westbound on Mikiska Boulevard, a dirt road, approaching Old Woman Springs Road at an excessive speed.

The CHP says that Figueroa proceeded across Old Woman Springs Road without slowing, and crashed into a northbound 2019 Ford F150, driven by Warren Fasching, a 23 year old man from Dewey, Arizona. Fasching was trailering a Toyota 4 Runner. The vehicles then crashed into a southbound Winnebago driven by Steven Long, a 62 year old man from Vista, who was towing a box trailer. All involved vehicles sustained major damage.

Fasching was identified as the driver who suffered from severe injuries and was airlifted to DRMC.

The collision is still under investigation by the CHP, though they say that alcohol is not suspected.

The CHP wants to remind motorists to drive at safe speeds on unimproved, dirt roads, and to be aware of uncontrolled intersections. All uncontrolled intersections on dirt roads should be treated as if a yield sign were posted.
