Theatre 29 got good news and bad news at last night’s Twentynine Palms City Council meeting. Reporter David Haldane was there and filed this…
Twentynine Palms isn’t ready to shell out $1.6 million to remodel Theatre 29. What it will do, however, is pay $185,000 for the project to be designed.
That was the verdict at last night’s City Council meeting after a long discussion on the popular theater’s contributions to the city and ambitious plans. Those plans call, among other things, for expanding capacity by 2,950 square feet, remodeling the existing building, adding a lighted amphitheater outside and building a decorative metal wall.
Acting unanimously, the Council expressed support for everything save the amphitheater and the wall, both of which were excluded from the funded design. Several council members expressed their hope that the theatre would seek outside funding. But they also left the door open for possible future city expenditures to make the project whole.
