The coronavirus has killed seven more San Bernardino County residents and infected an additional 137, the county public health department reported Thursday (May 28). There have been 190 deaths associated with COVID-19 and 4,914 confirmed cases in the county since March 1. Here in the Morongo Basin confirmed cases are now at 46 with 16 in Yucca Valley and one death. Joshua Tree has 15 cases and two deaths. Twentynine Palms now has nine cases and Morongo Valley has six.

Businesses have also started reopening in the county, with certain modifications to prevent the spread of the virus, including retail and malls, dine-in restaurants, hair salons and barbershops. Places of worship are also allowed to welcome back congregates. Social distancing, face coverings and good hygiene has helped the county flatten its curve of cases and bought hospitals time to build capacity, county officials have said.

In the county of 2.1 million residents, 57,385 have been tested. Of which, 8.6 percent were positive. The amount of testing was up 2.2 percent Thursday.

The time it takes for the disease to double in the community was 15.6 days. At the start of the pandemic in March, it was four to five days.

According to the county’s hospital census there were available hospital beds and ventilators.
