THE DROUGHT CONTINUES, SOME WATER CONSERVATION TIPS

The water districts in the Morongo Basin area have all implemented regulations to reduce water consumption. Managing editor Tami Roleff says leaky plumbing can waste a lot of water…

The first thing you should do to conserve water is to check your water meter for leaky plumbing. Check it last thing at night and then first thing in the morning. If the numbers are different, you have a leak somewhere. A leaky toilet can waste 50 gallons of water a day, and a leaky faucet can waste 20 gallons a day. If you have an older toilet, consider buying a new low-flow toilet that uses just over a gallon to flush. Some water agencies offer rebates for replacing old toilets. Replace your faucet with a low-flow aerator, and your shower head with a low-flow shower head. Washing dishes by hand with the faucet running uses about five gallons of water a minute. A dishwasher is much more efficient, using about 25 gallons for a full load. High efficiency clothes washers can save up to 30 gallons of water per load.
