The delightfully quirky Twentynine Palms weed show is this weekend. The weed show features desert residents competing for the best composition using local weeds and found objects in a variety of themed categories, including one for kids only and one category using an arrangement of live plant material with museum-quality purple glass as an accessory. The 2018 Weed Show, sponsored by the Twentynine Palms Historical Society, honors the colorful characters of Twentynine Palms. Categories are named after entrepreneur Nelle Godwin, lovable curmudgeon Doreen Chamberlin, newshound Prudie Underhill, desert artist Alice Moses, transportation engineer Johnnie Hastie, miner Bill McHaney, early desert tweeter Blanche Ellis, photographer Ted Richardson, athlete Barbara Grether, homesteader Bill Keys, philosopher John Samuelson, and recreation director Bill Proctor. This year’s weed show is scheduled for noon to 4 on Saturday, November 3, and 10 to 4 on Sunday, November 4 at the old schoolhouse museum in Twentynine Palms.
