TEAL FLAMINGOS SEEN ROOSTING IN THE MORONGO BASIN

Since the beginning of April, teal-colored flamingos have been appearing in yards of Morongo Basin residents. The flamingos are a fundraiser sponsored by the Morongo Basin Sexual Assault Services, a non-profit organization that provides support and counseling for victims of sexual abuse and their families. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the flamingos are a fun and whimsical way to both bring awareness to sexual assault, and to raise money for the organization. Deliesse Hitt of the Morongo Basin Sexual Assault Services says the teal flamingos have been all over the Morongo Basin, and have been doing a great job of drawing awareness to sexual assault in the Basin. “They’ve actually been all over the place, they’ve have gotten some good miles on them.” She explains how it works. “Every couple of days they go to a new house to stay for two days, then we get a new address for the flamingos to fly off to. And if they’re willing, a donation.” The recipients have been very accepting of being “flamingo’d,” too. “No complaints; people are very receptive of the teal flamingos.” Cindy Daigneault, who was flamingo’d last week, thought it was a fun idea. “It was quite a surprise to look out my front door and see teal-colored flamingos in my courtyard. At first I was thinking, what??? Then I saw the explanation attached and I thought, ‘What a great idea! Of course I’ll support this.’ And I had to make sure they migrated to a couple of my friends’ homes.” Hitt said the Morongo Basin Sexual Assault Services hopes to have more flamingos next year for the fundraiser.
