SWAMP COOLER DATA IN FROM WATER USAGE STUDY

In today’s hottest news story, a study was conducted to determine the efficiency of the swamp coolers in the high desert. Reporter Jef Harmatz has the results.

The swamp cooler study conducted last year by the Joshua Basin Water District and the Mojave Desert Conservation Resource District focused on the efficiency of swamp coolers and evaporative coolers in the Morongo Basin. The results showed that a single swamp cooler can use as much as 90 gallons of water during a single day when temperatures are above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This is significantly more than California’s recommendation that households in the state limit their usage to 55 gallons per day. The organizations behind the study hope that the data encourages the state to issue a water usage variance for our community, which deals with extraordinary summer temperatures and urge residents to tune up their swamp coolers this spring for the best possible efficiency.
