Suspicion of squatters leads to arrest at home in Morongo Valley

A Morongo Valley homeowner was alerted to possible squatters at his property, and one of the people found was arrested for investigation into being a felon in possession of ammunition. 

A neighbor alerted the owner of the home in the 9000 block North Star Trl. that a man and dog had taken up residence. The owner told the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department that he had not given anyone permission to live in the home. 

Deputies responded to the home and found a pitbull tied in the front of the house. They say the found four people inside of the home, including Mathew Stevens, 51, who is currently on parole for dissuading a witness in 2021 and prior violent felony convictions. Deputies report finding Stevens in proximity to several boxes of ammunition.

Matthew Stevens was arrested for investigation into being a prohibited person in possession of ammunition and for violating the terms of parole. He was booked into the West Valley Detention Center where he is being held without bail.
