As the weather heats up and we head into a season of worsening fire dangers, local law enforcement is inviting residents to turn in their illegal or dangerous fireworks, no questions asked. Reporter Heather Clisby has details….
Within unincorporated areas of San Bernardino County, fireworks are illegal, and Morongo Basin residents who wish to unload illegal or dangerous fireworks without any legal repercussions should take advantage of the county-wide Firework Surrender Days.
With no questions asked, residents can surrender illegal or dangerous fireworks by simply loading up their vehicle and driving to a designated location. Local Firework Surrender Days will be held at Fire Station 36, 6715 Park Blvd, in Joshua Tree on (Thursday) April 15 and (Saturday) 24 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The events offer a safe disposal option without the risk of fines or other enforcements. In the nearby city of Ontario, illegal fireworks resulted in the loss of two lives and over $3 million in structural damages.
Should damaging fires result from illegal fireworks, the responsible party may face criminal charges and be held liable for damages. Property owners can also be cited if they allow fireworks to be possessed, stored, or used on their property.
Residents may file an anonymous report using the new Illegal Firework Reporting System.
