California law allows parents of newborn babies to safely surrender their babies at hospitals and fire stations. The law’s intent is to save the lives of newborn infants at risk of abandonment by encouraging parents to safely surrender the infant within 72 hours of birth, with no questions asked. The most recent statistics show that 931 babies have been surrendered in California between 2001 and 2017. Loma Linda Children’s Hospital recently donated clothing and supply kits to the San Bernardino County Fire Department to ensure that infants who are surrendered at fire stations can be properly cared for until they are delivered to hospitals. The supply kits include a onesie, benie, blanket, and newborn diapers.
