Students in the high desert can now ride Basin Transit’s network of buses and other public transportation completely for free. Basin Transit announced the year-long “Students Ride Free” program on Friday, and the free rides for children in kindergarten through 12th grade are available immediately.
The program is funded via the Low Carbon Transit Operations Program, and is scheduled to last through June 2024.
No passes are necessary to ride, youth must simply show a valid K-12 school or government-issued ID to the bus operator when boarding. Teens in grades 9-12 may use a school ID issued for the new school year. Younger students in grades 8 and under, if asked, may present a school ID, or simply tell the operator their grade and which school they attend. Children under age 5 continue to be free but must be accompanied by an adult.
Riders can utilize the trip planner and interactive map on Basin Transit’s website to help navigate the best route for their destination.
