There is help available if you can’t afford your property taxes. If you are at least 62 years old, or are blind or disabled; own and occupy your own home; have a total household income of $35,500 or less; have at least 40 percent equity in your property; and do not have a reverse mortgage on your property, you may apply to postpone your property tax payment. Be aware that property tax payments that are postponed are subject to 7 percent interest. Property owners must re-apply each year and meet eligibility requirements. Applications are accepted through February 10, and will be processed in the order they are received. Applications are available by calling 800-952-5661, or online at sco.ca.gov.
