A man accused of stabbing his mother and brother held deputies at bay for about an hour before he surrendered Tuesday afternoon. According to the Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to the 5600 block of Daisy Avenue after receiving a report of a stabbing. It was reported that William Bassine, 30, of Twentynine Palms, stabbed his mother, Susan Turnbaugh, during an argument, then threw the knife at his brother Wayne Turnbaugh, causing a superficial wound to Wayne’s arm. As Deputies arrived, William Bassine barricaded himself inside the home. A stand-off ensued for about an hour, and residents in nearby homes were evacuated for safety reasons. Deputies finally managed to get the suspect to surrender. Susan Turnbaugh was transported by ambulance to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs with a non-life threatening wound. William Bassine was arrested for investigation of attempted murder, booked into the West Valley Detention Center with his bail set at $1,000,000. Bassine has an extensive criminal record. Just July 14, he was arrested on suspicion of elderly abuse and booked into the West Valley Detention Center.
