Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers of the annual Open Studio Art Tour cancelled the art tour last October. Organizers had planned to hold two art tours, over three weekends, this year, in April and again in October. Managing editor Tami Roleff says the April art tour has been canceled…
The organizers of the Open Studio Art Tours have cancelled the spring tour in April. At this time, the Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council, which sponsors the tour, plans to still hold the Open Studio Art Tour on three weekends in October: October 9-10, 16-17, and 23-24.
Artist registration is now open for the fall art tours. Artists who signed up for the tour in April can either get their fee refunded or applied to the October art tour. In addition, the MBCAC is looking for a tour director and communications director.
The MBCAC has seen a significant drop in artist registration numbers, where it is at only 20% of previous tours sign-ups.
Advertising revenue has also taken a hit, with indications by many sponsors that a spring tour is just not something they can support at this time, and certainly not at a level needed. Significantly fewer visitors to the area are expected, which of course affects art sales.
Under these circumstances, organizers say a spring art tour would be a shadow of years past. Instead, the MBCAC is now looking to October and celebrating its 20th anniversary fall tour scheduled for three weekends: Oct. 9/10; Oct. 16/17; Oct. 23/24.
Registration for fall is open.
