SPORTS CARD COLLECTOR IN TWENTYNINE PALMS HITS IT BIG

Brent Slavik started collecting sports cards at the age of 10. Recently he sold one for $35,000. Reporter David Haldane has the story…

It was kind of a windfall, really. He’d been collecting cards since childhood, but only selling them since 2015. Then a private collector in San Diego offered him $35,000 for a basketball card bearing the likeness of Golden State Warriors player Kevin Durant. And Brent Slavik, a 40-year- old civilian mechanic at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, knew exactly what to do. He gave $5,000 to his wife, put $10,000
into savings and spent the rest on, well, more cards. Slavik says he owns about 400,000 of them, mostly stacked in a bedroom closet. The rarer ones he keeps locked in safety deposit boxes at the bank. And as their value increases, Slavik believes, so will his.

But it’s not just the promise of riches that keeps him trolling on E-bay three hours a day; it’s more elemental than that. “I’m very passionate about it. It’s like an adrenaline rush.”
