Just three of every ten drivers are aware of the Move Over Law. That’s according to the National Safety Commission. The organization is working to improve that statistic and, in doing so, hopes to save the lives of first responders. Reporter Mike Lipsitz brings us this story on how the effort is coming to Twentynine Palms…
The Move Over Law requires drivers to move over one lane when approaching an incident where lights are flashing and tow operators, law enforcement, fire fighters or emergency medical technicians are working. If moving over isn’t possible, motorists must slow down. The law is in effect in all 50 states but the death toll among roadway responders continues to rise. Bringing awareness to the issue is the American Towman Spirit Ride. A nationwide relay carrying a colorful, ceremonial casket across the nation via tow trucks. The casket honors those killed and carries the message: “Slow Down, Move Over.” The ride will pass through Twentynine Palms as it relays the casket to local tow operator, David Bailey’s Auto Repair. The public is invited to join in a ceremony in front of Twentynine Palms City Hall and Veterans Park at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 28, followed by a procession of emergency service vehicles and tow trucks.
