SPELL-A-THON FUNDRAISER TO BENEFIT LOCAL LIBRARIES

If you physically cringe in the face of a misspelled word, your skills and sensitivities may be needed at the upcoming Morongo Basin Spell-A-Thon library fundraiser. Reporter and Word Nerd Heather Clisby has details…

Before spellcheck and autocorrect arrived in our digital lives, we used our brains. And those dormant skills will be in high demand at the annual Morongo Basin Spell-A-Thon fundraiser benefitting local libraries on Saturday, April 23.

The Spell-A-Thon will help fund services such as the Summer Reading Program for both kids and adults. The Kiwanis Club of Twentynine Palms joined forces with the Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, and Twentynine Palms Friends of the Library groups to make the Spell-A-Thon happen.

Participants should form teams of three that will work together to spell words in rotation. Each team will receive a schedule, pledge sheet, rules, and practice words in advance of the event which will take place from 9:00 a.m. until noon at the Luckie Park Activity Center, 74325 Joe Davis Drive, in Twentynine Palms.

Space is limited to twelve teams of three spellers and the deadline to sign up is Wednesday, April 13. To sign up, send an email to [email protected]. For more info, call Paula Steib at 760-220-9421.
