SPECIAL COPPER MOUNTAIN COLLEGE CLASS FEATURES NOTED ARCHITECT

Local artists, sculptors, and designers, and anyone with an interest in architecture or the visual arts might want to pay attention to this next story. Reporter Mike Lipsitz tells about an opportunity to learn from a master in the field…
Architect Glen Howard Small thinks big. Those who know him know the pun is unavoidable. He’s been called “The Father of Green Architecture,” co-founded the Southern California Institute of Architecture, was the subject of a 2002 documentary “My Father the Genius,” and later became the architectural favored son of Nicaragua’s government elite until a regime change forced him into self-imposed exile. At 78, Small shows no signs of slowing as he plans an experimental eco-home and seeks backers for an open-air pedestrian overpass to bridge the two sides of downtown Joshua Tree, bisected by the highway. Called an “inspirational educator,” Small will teach a 10-session Architectural Patterns class at Copper Mountain College, beginning February 20. There are no pre-requisites for the Saturday class, which is open to high school students, members of the public, and anyone with an interest in architecture. Register through the CMC Office of Student Services or for more information, email Small at [email protected].
