Sky’s The Limit Observatory and Nature Center marks the 50th anniversary of the Lunar Landing and the importance of the Moon in indigenous cultures with a pair of events this Saturday, July 20. Here’s reporter Mike Lipsitz with your invitation…
Saturday’s program begins not at the observatory, but in the Community Services Building on Joe Davis Drive in Twentynine Palms. The program “Going to the Moon: How Did We Get There?” with artist Chuck Caplinger and astronomer Ray Yeager begins at 6:30 p.m. with a visual trip of the space program up to the Apollo 11 Moon Landing on July 20, 1969. Back at the Observatory on Utah Trail, just north of the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park at 8:30 p.m., the program continues with “La Luna Desvela: The Moon Reveals,” honoring Latino Conservation Week with a program in Spanish, English, and American Sign Language. Co-sponsored by the Wildlands Conservancy, Mojave Desert Land Trust, and Sky’s The Limit, the evening features Native American stories with live desert creatures. The campus opens at 7:30 p.m. Carpooling is encouraged. There is a suggested donation of $10 per vehicle. More information is available at skysthelimit29.org.
